Cuz I'm 5 foot 2. I want to dance with you. And I'm sophisticated fun...
Allow me to gloat in a compliment for a second. So, today I am walking through my store and one of the employees ask me what I am up to. I respond with one of my sarcastic comments and continue on my pointless journey through the store. He then says, "You are the coolest manager that has ever worked here. If you asked me to do something I would just do it. If anyone else asked me to do it, I wouldn't do it." I smiled and responded with, " Well, thank you but I am not sure if that is true." He said, "People like you Blair, which means you are a good manager." In the end, I am not sure necessarily what makes a good manager. Because to be a manager you have to be somewhat thick skinned and cannot worry about whether people like you or dislike you. It's impossible to be liked by everyone. But what I loved about his comment was that he said he would do what I told him to do. I remember at Garts in Boulder all the employees were willing to do anything for me. If I needed them to stay 2 extra hours they would always do it. They would always say, "Only for you Blair. I only do this for you." I realized how much easier that made my job. They respected me and in turn I respected them. I respect the people who work for me. I don't look at myself as an authority necessarily to them. I can't look at myself like that. But I take comfort in knowing that if a job needs to get done I have 20 employees who are going to back me up.
